Youth -- So What's Happening?
Lately, my summer activities have consisted of working on putting ministry teams together in each ELCA congregation in the Greater New Orleans Metropolitan area. These youth ministry teams are essential for discerning God's call to the mission of youth ministry for each congregation. What I have learned while organizing these ministry teams is that when planning events, the system works better when everyone works together. For example, the CTK youth ministry team is planning a canoe trip not just for CTK youth and families, but is inviting participants from all ELCA congregations in the area. Besides CTK planning for a day of canoeing, in August, Grace Lutheran will be hosting Ken Medina, a talented musician who will attract youth and families from all over the area. In September, the "What's Next?" ministry team is planning an area-wide lock-in with the theme being "Who am I?" In October, Galilean Church in La Place is going to be the host congregation for a Christmas in October event. Christmas in October is a service event in partnership with Habitat for Humanity to help rebuild homes in New Orleans. Good Shepherd in Marrero is also planning an area-wide progressive dinner for all ELCA youth in the area in the month of November.
Basically, the area-wide consortium of leadership focused on youth ministry is beginning to take shape. This consortium has occurred through the creation of Life Liners, a group of leaders focused on youth ministry that meets once a month. And also, the "What's Next?" ministry team, which is a consortium of 3 area churches that organize events and grow leaders in the church.
With the creation of these consortiums and groups, area youth, youth leaders, and parents are beginning to build closer relationships with each other.
